Reds Agree On Two-Year Extension With Freel

Yahoo.com - Reds utilityman Ryan Freel agreed to terms Monday on a two-year contract extension that will take him through arbitration and into free agency.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Freel's current contract would have expired after this season, making him eligible for arbitration. Instead, he is under contract through 2009, when he will be eligible for free agency. [READ] .

Editorial: Diplomacy should be a requirement

I think that every student should be required to learn to play the game Diplomacy as part of the required school curriculum. Not only would it be fun, but it would help prepare students to play the games of politics in life and in their chosen careers.

As I've stated in this space before, I enjoy playing games, particularly board games which require using the brain for strategy of some sort, usually with some historical significance and most of the time with territory to conquer. With most games there is some bit of luck or chance involved as most involve die rolls or probability charts.

Not Diplomacy.

There are no dice in this game, which first saw the light of day back in 1958. The only luck and chance in this game is that which the player creates, not the roll of a die.

Faculty union prepares for awareness event

Negotiations for a new contract for faculty continues as members of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties prepares for a vote and march to be held next week on campus.

An authorization vote will determine if faculty are in favor of striking if a contract is not met by June 31, when the current contract expires. A majority vote is needed in order to strike after the contract expires, as long as a new contract has not been drafted and signed by all members.

"In the two previous contract negotiating years, faculty and coaches worked without a contract in the fall semester," said Tom Daddesio, SRU APSCUF vice president and assistant professor of Modern Languages and Culture. "This year, state APSCUF has decided we will not work without a contract as we have done in the past."

In the last few negotiation years, faculty voters have been overwhelmingly in favor of a strike.

Consultation on Reform of Justice System Held in Portland

The last in the series of 22 public consultations on reform of the Jamaican justice system was held at the Old Marina in Port Antonio on Tuesday, April 17.

They were held across the country to engage members of the public, as well as key justice system stakeholders to gather information on the problems, concerns and opportunities facing the justice system in Jamaica.

Among those in attendance were justices of the peace, members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), representatives of various business and civic organizations in Portland and members of the general public.

Included in the matters discussed were delays in the trial of court cases, the need to improve the operation of the Children's Court, the appropriate mode of attire in court, mediation training for Justices of the Peace (JPs) and other court officials, the importance of restorative justice, the appropriate sentencing for particular crimes, and the need to improve the condition of court houses.

UW wants to clamp down on students' off-campus acts

Rowdy students living on Greek Row and in the surrounding neighborhood would face a new three-strikes rule under a proposed expansion of the University of Washington's authority.

In the past, most off-campus behavior has fallen outside the UW's jurisdiction. But university officials, responding to a recent spate of violence and to longtime community concern over disorderliness, are proposing a two-year pilot program under which they would keep files on students who misbehave.

Students who receive a citation from either campus or Seattle police would get a warning letter from the UW. A second citation could require the student to attend mediation with an accuser. A third police citation — or failure to attend mediation — would allow the UW to initiate disciplinary action up to expulsion.
